With the wide range of modern computer technologies, both offline and online tools, unusual computer words and meanings – it's often might be a little bit complicated to understand how things work and what you should focus on, when deciding to go online with your ideas and future plans. And that's why we are here – to help you do the right choice, give some advices and guide to the world wide web.

Modern technologies allow everyone do quite a lot of things online. Share your ideas, discuss them with other people, collaborate with co-workers and clients, sell and buy things, express yourself in the most unique way without fairs and stress. Internet does not lock you in your home city or area, instead – the whole world can be yours.

On this page we have collected most common objects, that you meet when going “online” and given them breif description.

Domain – for ordinary user domain is a name, that might point to some place in the Internet. There are different types of domains, but they all share one common thing – they point somewhere. Each symbol, letter – makes domain unique. All domains have some “ending”, or TLD (top level domain). Most popular on the Internet are .com, .net, .org. Each country have their own country specific names, like .no (Norway), .se (Sweden), .dk (Denmark), .de (Germany), .eu (European Union) and so on. But regardless everything – it's just a name pointing somewhere. Where to? Well, let's see the next term...

Hosting – in a short – hosting is a place on a computer, often called server, because it's always connected to the Internet, it's always turned on and use special programs, that do specific tasks. Such computers might look like a regular computer, but it's the software, that make them being a server. A hosting is a place on a disk and combination of some services, that somehow make things work. So domain points to a specific server and software on the server knows, to which files that domain is pointing to. As pointed before – it is also important to have number of services. Without them any hosting become useless.

Hosting service – it's a very wide term. Any service is basically a program, that does something. And you should understand, that with human fantasy there are no limits for what it could do and be. It's more easy to ask what do you want, instead of trying to explain every service individually, especially because very often several services work together to deliver some information or archive a goal. There are services for delivering content to you browser (these are called webservers), services for sending and receiving emails (here we are talking about mail servers), also it's quite important to transfer files from one place to another (file transfer service help here), there are services for voice and video transmitting and many others. Underneath more or less visible part of each service there are many big and small applications, just like on any modern phone or computer. We won't go deep into details here, but later on some of the most important applications will be briefly explained.

DNS – abbr. for domain name system is a service for pointing different domains to different servers. This service helps to send users of Internet to different servers, based of the requested domain and service. For achieving this DNS uses combination of numbers, that IT-geeks call IP address, and which basically identifies specific and unique server.

All our servers feature the following technologies and services

cPanel – hosting control panel, that helps hosting owners to configure and use different services without a hassle. It's web interface offers easy way for configuring email accounts, email forwarders, autoresponders, mailing lists, webstats, allows database management, DNS management, file management and many other things. Here you will find their feature tour: http://cpanel.net/website-owners/feature-tour/

PHP – programming language, which was made for the needs of the Internet. When it was introduced, it became very easy for every programmer to start making programmes for the online use. There are countless small scripts and large applications, that use PHP. It's being preferred for the speed, easy of use and wide range of functions, available out of the box. Our servers provide you with PHP 5.4, 5.3 and 5.2, although other versions are available on request (subject to extra fee).

MySQL (v5.5) – is a relational database server, that allows storing and accessing any kind of information with a very high speed. There is no need to store information in separate files, instead – save it in a database. Each database is a set of tables, similar to Excel. Use of SQL query language lets you to access and manage stored data in a very efficient way from almost any online application, since most modern programming languages have the ability to connect and work with MySQL databases.

Apache (v2.2) – webserver, that handles direct communication with internet user from the server side. When you request something from server through broweser – your computer is actually talking to a webserver. Apache 2.2 is fast responsive, rich of features webserver. And it does not come alone – we also have the following installed addons, that additionally improve it's daily life:

  • mod_security – additional security module, that helps filtering out bad visitors and hackers.
  • mod_deflate – this addon compresses data stream from the server, so it reaches your visitor more quickly. By transmitting less actual information, webpages are being loaded ~20-50% faster.
  • mod_rewrite – helps presenting your pages in a more search engine friendly way. It might be required to enable it in your application.
